2012 Summer SAT, PSAT classes
(This will be our 2nd year running SAT classes. 2011 SAT classes were very successful. Mr. Head and Mr. Norris from Chapel Hill High School will still teach the classes this year).
2-week session:
Session I: June 18-29, (Reading, writing) and Math (ratio, 2:1), Tuition $340
Session II: Aug 6-17, (Reading, writing) and Math (ratio, 2:1), Tuition $340
Time: 9am-12pm
Location: 110 N Elliott Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514
class size: 12 ( Forms received will be processed on a first come, first served basis until the sites reach capacity).
Registration fee: $35 download form
(option: student may stay in ASAC summer camps after the SAT class for half tuition plus lunch fee)
Instructors:
reading and writing: Mr. Head
Mr. Head has been a teacher in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools since 2001, having taught 10th, 11th and 12th grade English classes, in addition to supervising the school newspaper. He also has many years of experience preparing high-school students for the critical reading and writing sections of the SAT. Mr. Head attended the University of Virginia, where he earned his bachelor's degree with distinction, as well as his Master of Teaching degree in English education. He earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2008.
Math: Mr. Norris
Mr. Norris has been a teacher in the CHCCS since 2003, having taught Algebra, Geometry, Honors Geometry, AP Calculus AB. Mr. Norris has also taught Mathematical Problem Solving in Duke University TIP e-Studies Program, has been an instructor for GRE/GMAT math preparation at Durham Tech and a SAT Prep instructor at SAT Prep company. Mr. Norris attended UNC, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Master of Arts in Teaching.
The American School of Asian Culture SAT-preparation class is a two-week course designed to ensure that students are well prepared for and highly familiar with the SAT test. Students will learn strategies that will help them to navigate successfully the math, verbal, and writing sections. Teachers will offer tips for understanding and decoding the questions and problems on the test; completing all sections in the time allotted; and guessing on multiple-choice questions and eliminating incorrect answers. Students will receive instruction, practice, and feedback in the following areas: the SAT essay, common grammatical problems, improving paragraphs, improving sentences, vocabulary etymology, critical-reading strategies, topical math review, grid-in responses and formula review. Instructors will offer group instruction, as well as independent practice with all sections of the exam.
